Skill-Up Support in Yamagata: Event Report

スキルアップサポート in 山形 イベントレポート
On Sunday, February 4th, we held the first "Yokomo Drift Skill-Up Support" event at Rolling Park Nakano in Tendo City, Yamagata Prefecture. The event took place with high expectations from participants, as it is a new, lecture-focused event series that started this year.

The opening ceremony included an explanation of the day's schedule and the support plan for each participant. This event was attended by a variety of people, including those new to RC drifting, those driving on asphalt for the first time, and others who traveled from afar.

Because the number of entries was quite high, we did not hold mini-games and proceeded with the schedule as follows:

Morning: Staff machine inspection

In the afternoon, we held setting lectures in order of bib number. The "No. 1 Skill-Up Award," presented to the participant who showed the most improvement during the day, went to "Tat-tsu." After receiving the setup lecture, he thoroughly refined his own machine, a YD-2, and put on a fantastic performance.

"PICK UP Support"

In our "PICK UP Support" segment, we address common issues among participants and share the solutions we implemented. This time, there were many questions regarding the following two points:

・Lack of speed when accelerating out of turns

・Tendency to spin out during cornering

  • Solution for "Lack of speed when accelerating"

In many cases where there was a lack of speed during acceleration, we suspected a lack of rear traction, but in reality, it was often the front end causing the problem. Specifically, as shown in the photo on the top right, if the wheels are toed out, the resistance when driving straight is high, making it difficult to gain speed. By reducing the toe-out as shown on the bottom right, the front-end resistance was reduced, making it easier to gain speed.

  • Tendency to spin out during cornering

Machines that were reported to spin out easily during cornering often had a case like the one on the right, where "the left steering angle was greater than the right steering angle."

Additionally, things like the tire coming into contact with the damper as shown here are also causes for spinning out.

By adjusting the steering angle as seen in this photo, the machine became much harder to spin during cornering, and many said it became "much easier to drive." Incidentally, the Ackerman setup shown here is the state when the newly released YD-2E is assembled according to the manual.

Our next event is scheduled to be held at Faster in Saitama Prefecture.

We look forward to seeing everyone there.
