Drift Package

It doesn't work even when I turn the switch on. What is wrong with it?

First, please refer to the instruction manual once again and check for any assembly errors. If you still cannot find the cause, please refer to the checklist below.

  • Is the battery fully charged and securely connected to the speed controller?
  • Is the transmitter switched on and the antenna extended?
  • Have the wires from the speed controller been securely connected to the receiver, motor, and steering servo?
  • Have you performed the initial setup for the speed controller?
  • Was the assembly of the front and rear gearboxes performed correctly?
  • Is the backlash adjustment between the pinion gear and the spur gear too tight?
How much tire wear is there?

While there is almost no wear on carpet surfaces, the tread will naturally wear down on asphalt and similar surfaces. This varies depending on the type of asphalt and the roughness of the surface, but you can generally expect to get about 30 to 40 battery packs' worth of running time where wear is slow, and around 10 battery packs where it is fast.
By the way, spare drift rings (resin rings) are also sold for Zero-One tires, so as long as the tread on the rubber section hasn't worn away, you can reduce running costs by simply replacing the rings.

How many minutes can it run on a single battery?

The runtime for a single battery pack is determined by factors such as the battery's capacity and the motor's power consumption. Batteries are usually labeled with their capacity (mAh/milliamp-hours), and the higher this capacity, the longer you can drive. As for motors, a higher turn count (the number of times the copper wire is wound inside the motor) results in lower current consumption, while a lower turn count leads to higher current consumption. With the standard 1400mAh battery and D1R (27T) motor included in the running set, you should be able to drive for about 15 to 20 minutes on an asphalt surface.
In most cases, a motor with a higher turn count (T) will have a slower rotation speed, while one with a lower turn count (T) will have a faster rotation speed; therefore, you should assume that a lower turn count will lead to higher current consumption. Additionally, when the road surface grip is high, it puts more load on the motor, which tends to increase current consumption.

What do I need to get to run an RC drift car (drift package)?

The Drift Package kit includes the chassis and parts for assembly, tires and wheels, a clear body, and graphic decals. The following items are required in addition to this kit:

  • Control equipment
This is the equipment needed to operate the vehicle as a radio-controlled car. The components required include a transmitter for the driver to operate the car, a receiver mounted on the car to receive signals, a speed controller to drive the motor, a steering servo to operate the steering, a motor for driving, batteries for the transmitter, a battery for driving, and a battery charger. Yokomo offers a "Running Set" package that bundles these items together. (Transmitter batteries are sold separately.)
  • Paint for the body (specifically for polycarbonate)
  • Tools for assembling the chassis
Is it possible to use a Drift Package for grip racing to compete for lap times?

Yes, that is certainly possible. The Drift Package chassis is based on a competition touring car and can be adapted to various conditions by swapping out parts. While you can certainly enjoy grip driving in the stock configuration simply by switching to grip tires, modifying the drivetrain style and suspension settings will allow you to enjoy even faster touring car racing.

Drift contest?

Just like in the actual D1 Grand Prix, we hold contests where participants compete in drifting skills using RC cars. Yokomo's Drift Meeting is a competition where participants vie for the top spots using the same judging system as real-world racing. It is held four to five times a year, with classes tailored to different skill levels so that a wide range of drivers can enjoy it. Events are primarily held at Yatabe Arena, and we post the event guidelines on our website about a month before each event, so please check the event information from time to time.

Are there drift-specific tracks?

While you can enjoy your Drift Package in parking lots and similar areas, there are also many dedicated RC circuits across the country, and recently, more and more of them are specialized for drift RC cars. Tsukuba RC Arena (Tsukuba City, Ibaraki Prefecture), where Yokomo events are held, features on-road, off-road, and dedicated drift tracks, and is bustling with many visitors every day. Since staff members who are well-versed in setups and driving are always on-site, you can ask them for all sorts of information.

How do I turn on the light?

Yokomo sells light unit plastic parts designed to fit each of our drift bodies. First, mask the light sections when painting the body to prevent paint from getting on them, then install the light unit plastic parts from the inside after painting. Complete the process by installing an optional Active LED Light Unit (SD-LUF2) or similar, and connecting the wiring to the receiver.
Some light unit plastic parts come with pre-installed LEDs, but these are wired for constant illumination only; to make them flash, you will need to use a separate flash unit (SD-FULS) or similar.
We also offer other items such as LED door mirrors, stainless steel mufflers with built-in LEDs, underglow neon sets, and wheel lights, allowing you to make your night runs even more exciting.

There are several types of kits available; what are the differences between them?

The most popular Drift Package kits are the D1 series and Street series kits, which include bodies. Typically, you would install a separately sold controller into this kit to complete your drift RC car, but for those who want to install optional parts right away, we also offer kits without bodies that come with optional parts included as standard. Since these kits with included optional parts are priced reasonably as they don't result in leftover parts after the options are installed, they are ideal for those who want a high level of driving performance from the start.
Furthermore, for those who find assembling the chassis troublesome or who want to enjoy drift driving as soon as possible, we also offer the "Drift Racer," a pre-assembled chassis with a controller already installed (body, tires, and wheels sold separately). Although the specifications differ slightly from the standard kit, you can start driving just by adding your preferred body (pre-painted versions are also available) and tires/wheels to the Drift Racer and charging the battery.

What are optional parts?

More than 200 dress-up parts are available for Drift Package to improve chassis performance or enhance its appearance. These include tune-up parts that rival real cars, such as adjustable oil shocks and stabilizers, as well as vivid blue-anodized aluminum parts and components made from high-grade materials like carbon and titanium. We call these optional parts, and by selecting them according to your preferences, you can create a unique, one-of-a-kind machine.

The road noise is unusually loud, isn't it?

While some gear noise from the drivetrain and road noise from the tires is normal, if it becomes excessively loud, please check the motor mounting and adjust the spur gear and pinion gear so that there is an appropriate gap (backlash) between them. Since either too tight or too loose a backlash can cause noise, it is best to adjust it so that there is a gap roughly the thickness of a piece of the plastic parts bag.
Also, if the drive gear inside the front or rear gearbox is not fully seated in the 1480 bearing, the gear mesh inside the gearbox may become too tight and cause noise. Please ensure that the drive gears and the shim spacers on the outside of the spool joints are securely installed.

It keeps spinning right away.

If the car spins even with just a slight touch of the throttle despite the front tires being pointed straight, there may be an issue preventing the drivetrain from rotating correctly. First, confirm that the speed controller has been initialized, then lift the chassis and repeatedly toggle the throttle on and off to verify that the front, rear, left, and right tires are rotating properly. If any part seems to be experiencing heavy braking, it may be due to an assembly error, so remove the motor and adjust each wheel so that it spins smoothly.

What kind of road surfaces can the Drift Package be driven on?

Basically, it can be driven on any type of flat surface. We recommend asphalt or concrete, and it can also be enjoyed on short-pile carpet. Special cases include P-tiles, flooring, or even ice, but you must be very careful about potential surface damage or water getting into the chassis.

What kind of paint should I use for the body?

The body is made of a resin called polycarbonate, which is resistant to impacts and the like. Because it returns to its original shape even after some denting from crashes, it is ideal for RC car bodies; however, standard plastic paints often do not adhere well to it and tend to peel off. Many RC hobby shops sell paints specifically designed for polycarbonate, so please be sure to use those.

Why are drift packages capable of drifting?

Although drift tires had existed for some time, their high grip levels caused excessive speed, meaning that "drifting" often amounted to little more than a momentary slide of the tail through a corner. Rear-wheel-drive setups were also prone to spinning out, making the long-distance drifting seen today difficult and limiting the hobby to a handful of enthusiasts. In response, Yokomo developed the Zero-One tire—a resin ring fitted over a rubber tire—and combined it with the MR-4TC SD, a 4WD chassis originally developed for racing. This setup kept speeds under control while achieving an overwhelming amount of drift distance. Despite the resin tread surface, the rubber tire base absorbs vibration and noise, which is another key feature that allows it to deliver performance unlike anything else.

Please tell me what tools are needed to make the kit.

The Drift Package kit includes a cross wrench for tightening wheel nuts, a 1.5mm hex wrench for securing the pinion gear, and a turnbuckle wrench for adjusting the upper arms. In addition to these, you will need the following:

  • Phillips screwdriver (large)
  • Phillips screwdriver (small)
  • Utility knife
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Scissors

Beyond these, it is also useful to have side cutters for removing parts from the runners, as well as a ride height gauge, camber gauge, and other similar tools.

Nickel-cadmium and nickel-metal hydride batteries

Is there a guideline for the usage limit?

If you notice phenomena such as a decrease in charging capacity, a shorter travel time after charging, or a loss of power, it is considered that the battery has reached the end of its life, and you should purchase a new battery.

How do I charge nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) and nickel-cadmium (NiCd) batteries?

In principle, please follow the instruction manual of the charger you are using when charging. When charging nickel-metal hydride batteries, be sure to use a charger that is explicitly labeled as compatible with nickel-metal hydride batteries.

※It is extremely dangerous to charge nickel-metal hydride batteries using a charger designed exclusively for nickel-cadmium batteries, so please never do this. (The battery may rupture.)

Also, since the temperature (heat generation) of the battery during charging will be high, we recommend using a charger equipped with a temperature sensor that monitors the battery temperature while charging.

Is there a guideline for the service life of NiCd and NiMH batteries?

If you notice phenomena such as a decrease in charging capacity, a shorter running time after charging, or a loss of power, it is considered the end of the battery's service life, so please purchase a new battery.

Lithium polymer battery

What is balance charging, and why is it necessary?

Generally, lithium-polymer batteries for RC cars have a 2-cell(*) structure, but as they are repeatedly charged and discharged, the voltage difference between the cells can become uneven (the voltage gap widens).
As this condition progresses, the battery's lifespan may shorten, or its power output may decrease. Resolving this state of voltage disparity while charging the battery is known as balance charging.
*2-cell refers to a battery state where two lithium-polymer batteries are connected in series within the battery case. Since 1 cell is 3.7V, 2 cells result in a voltage of 7.4V.
Lithium-polymer batteries for hobby use typically range from 1 to 5 cells. The batteries used in mobile phones and smartphones are also 1-cell lithium-polymer batteries.

How should I dispose of a lithium polymer battery that is no longer usable?

Prepare a glass container, plastic bucket, or similar vessel large enough to hold the LiPo battery and at least 500cc of water, and fill it with saltwater (10g of salt—about two heaping teaspoons—per 500g of water). Submerge the battery completely in the solution. It will be fully discharged in about two weeks.
Dispose of the battery only after it has been rendered safe by eliminating its battery function, thereby removing the risk of ignition.
*Basically, you should ensure all electricity inside the battery is discharged to eliminate the risk of ignition before disposing of it as non-combustible or combustible waste. (Since waste classification varies by municipality, please follow your local government's instructions.)

I accidentally short-circuited the battery; is it still safe to use?

In addition to short circuits, if the battery can no longer be charged in LiPo mode, or if the hard case becomes swollen or cracked, consider it damaged and do not use it again under any circumstances. Please dispose of damaged batteries.

My battery has swollen; is it still safe to use?

As lithium polymer batteries become damaged or deteriorate, they may swell or leak.

A battery that is swollen or leaking is already internally damaged; for safety, do not continue to use it, and dispose of it properly after following the appropriate procedures.

(Please refer to "How should I dispose of a lithium polymer battery that can no longer be used?")

What is the purpose of the other connector that comes out separately from the connection connector?

This is called a balance connector. By connecting it to a charger equipped with a balance charging function, you can measure the voltage of each cell in the battery and use it when performing balance charging.

What does "○○C" mean for a lithium polymer battery?

This is called the C-rate, which indicates how much current the battery itself can output. The higher the C-rate value, the more suitable the battery is for racing applications that consume large amounts of current.

For a 4000mAh 30C 7.4V battery:
1C = 4A
4A × 30C = 120A
This means that the battery can discharge a maximum current of 120A.
*1C refers to the charge/discharge current that would bring the battery to its charge termination voltage (fully charged) or discharge termination voltage (no remaining capacity) in one hour.

However, generally speaking, as the C-rate value increases, the rate of self-discharge tends to become higher; therefore, even when in storage, it is necessary to manage the battery by regularly checking the charge level to prevent over-discharging.

What are the advantages of lithium-polymer batteries?

Compared to conventional nickel-cadmium and nickel-metal hydride batteries, this battery is lighter, more powerful, and has a higher capacity. Another attractive feature is that it is less prone to the memory effect—a type of deterioration where usable capacity decreases after repeated use—allowing it to remain in good condition for a long time.

How should lithium-polymer batteries be stored?

Maintain a charge level of approximately 30% to 50% of the rated capacity, place the battery in a storage bag (commonly known as a LiPo bag), and store it in a well-ventilated area away from fire hazards.
Do not store the battery in humid locations, areas with a risk of short circuits, or with or near flammable materials, as this is extremely dangerous.

What is a LiPo bag?

A LiPo bag is a storage bag designed to minimize damage from potential battery ruptures or fires during charging and storage.

Battery products, including not only lithium-polymer batteries but also standard dry-cell batteries, can potentially rupture or catch fire due to external factors such as damage or improper handling, as well as deterioration.

Lithium-polymer batteries, in particular, store high-density energy, so please be sure to use a LiPo bag to prioritize safety and contain any potential damage in an emergency.

How do I discharge a lithium-polymer battery?

Unlike NiCd or NiMH batteries, there is no need to discharge the remaining capacity before recharging.
Please use balanced charging when charging the lithium polymer battery. (Please refer to "What is balanced charging?")

How do I charge a lithium polymer battery?

In principle, please perform charging in accordance with the instruction manual for the charger you are using.
When charging a lithium-polymer battery, be sure to use a charger that is explicitly labeled as compatible with or designed specifically for lithium-polymer batteries.

Lithium-Polymer Battery Charging Procedure (Reference example: 7.4V 3500mAh)

  1. Turn on the power to the charger.
  2. Connect the output cord corresponding to the connector shape of the battery you intend to charge to the charger unit. *Important
  3. Connect the output cord to the battery connector.
  4. Connect the battery's balance charging connector to the charger unit or the corresponding balance port.
  5. Set the charger to the lithium-polymer (Li-Po) balance charging mode.
  6. Enter the battery information (for the reference example: 2 cells for 7.4V / 3.5A for 3500mAh).
  7. After re-verifying the connection status, place the connected battery into a Li-Po bag. *Important
  8. After re-verifying the charging settings, press the start button on the charger.

* Precautions (Must be strictly followed)

  • Do not leave the charger unattended while charging a battery, and ensure you are able to take action if any abnormalities are observed.
  • Always connect the output cord to the charger unit first, then connect it to the battery connector.
  • Always adhere to the 1C setting for the charging amperage. Charging at a high amperage will cause damage or degradation to the battery.
  • After charging is complete, perform the process in reverse by disconnecting the battery connector from the output cord, and then disconnecting the output cord from the charger unit. (Incorrect handling of the cord order may cause the metal terminals to touch and short-circuit.)
  • For safety, please use a Li-Po bag when handling batteries.
It no longer recharges.

Unlike standard dry-cell batteries, lithium-polymer batteries enter a state called "over-discharge" if used below a certain voltage, rendering them unusable thereafter.

※You cannot use them until they are completely drained, as you might with dry-cell, nickel-cadmium, or nickel-metal hydride batteries.

Attempting to recover a battery that has been over-discharged is extremely dangerous; please ensure you dispose of it properly after following the appropriate procedures.

(Please refer to "How should I dispose of unusable lithium-polymer batteries?")

General questions

What do I need to get started with RC cars?

Many of the radio-controlled cars featured on the Yokomo website are what are known as "kits." These consist primarily of the chassis—the internal structure of the car—and depending on the product, may also include a body and a motor as standard equipment.

On each product introduction page, we have included a section titled "Items required for operation," which lists the additional components you will need to purchase to run that specific product. As there are many types of motors and batteries, choosing the right ones can be difficult for first-time buyers. However, Yokomo offers "Running Sets," which are controller sets recommended for beginners, tailored to each category. Purchasing one of these alongside your kit will provide you with an optimal system.

What is a frequency (crystal)?

To allow multiple people to operate radio-controlled models simultaneously, radio frequencies are divided into segments. These frequency segments are called "bands," and the components that enable the transmission and reception of signals on these specific frequencies are known as crystals (quartz crystal oscillators). These frequencies are strictly regulated by the Radio Act; for surface-based R/C models, there are 12 bands (01–12) in the 27 MHz range and 8 bands (61–75) in the 40 MHz range. When operating an R/C model, you must ensure that no one nearby is using the same band before turning on your power switch.
Until around 2006, only these 20 bands—meaning only 20 vehicles—could be operated at the same time. Recently, however, 2.4 GHz transmitter/receiver systems that do not require crystals have been developed, allowing even more R/C models to be operated simultaneously. This 2.4 GHz system uses the same technology as wireless LANs for computers, automatically searching for and utilizing open frequency bands, which means you no longer need to worry about the bands others are using.

You cannot go straight.

When assembling for the first time, you must adjust the transmitter steering so that it is centered. Please refer to the manual for each transmitter and adjust the steering trim so that the vehicle travels in a straight line at low speeds.

Please tell me what tools are needed to build an RC car.

The tools included with each kit vary, but generally, it is recommended to have the following items on hand to make assembly easier.

  • Phillips screwdriver (large)
  • Phillips screwdriver (small)
  • Craft knife
  • Side cutters
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Scissors

Please note that the Ichiroku M series comes with wheel nuts and a Phillips screwdriver, so you only need a pair of scissors to cut the double-sided tape for installing the electronics to assemble it.

At what age can I start operating it?

Even quite small children can handle the controls. However, to operate them correctly, they will need hands large enough to hold the transmitter. Unfortunately, smaller transmitters are not commercially available, so it is likely that children from the lower elementary school grades onward will be able to use the standard-sized transmitter.
As for assembling the radio-controlled model, it involves tasks that require strength, such as tightening screws, so the appropriate age is generally upper elementary school and up. For younger children, we recommend that a parent or guardian assist them.

What is the top speed?

For 1/10 scale competitive RC cars designed for high-grip driving, a typical speed is around 40 to 70 km/h, while for drift cars, it is around 20 to 30 km/h. Being 1/10 scale, this is enough to provide a real sense of speed, and beginners may even find them tricky to control at first. Recently, there has been a push to enjoy close-quarters racing at more realistic speeds; at Yokomo, we host the Super Scale Car Grand Prix, where drivers compete at top speeds of around 20 km/h (the equivalent of 200 km/h in a real car), with many participants enjoying the experience of realistic-scale RC racing.
Incidentally, the record top speed for an RC car built solely for speed is over 200 km/h.

How many minutes can you run for?

While it varies significantly depending on the racing category, road surface conditions, and the battery and motor being used, most entry-level RC cars are designed to run for about 10 to 15 minutes. The biggest factors affecting runtime are the battery and motor; a higher battery capacity (the amount of charge it can hold) allows for longer runtimes. As for motors, speed varies by type, and generally, slower motors result in longer runtimes, while faster motors consume more power and result in shorter runtimes. Depending on the RC car's setup, it is possible to run for over an hour continuously. To use a car analogy, it is easiest to think of battery capacity as the fuel tank size and motor power consumption as the engine's fuel efficiency.

Will it break if it bumps into something?

Of course, it can break if it hits a wall or similar object at high speed, but it is built with enough strength to withstand minor crashes or tumbles without damage. The body is also made of a material called polycarbonate, which is used in some types of bulletproof glass, so it should not break easily. Even if a part were to be damaged, all parts are sold as replacement components, so you can restore it through part replacement or repair and enjoy it for a long time.

How does a remote-controlled car work?

Yokomo's radio-controlled cars are electric, meaning they are powered by batteries. By passing battery power through a device called a speed controller, the amount of electricity corresponding to the input from the transmitter is sent to the motor, allowing the motor's rotation speed to be adjusted for speed control. Additionally, power and signals from the same source are sent to the servo that operates the steering (steering servo), allowing for smooth, stepless control of the steering angle, which enables seamless driving.

How can it be controlled from a distance?

RC stands for radio control model, meaning models that are operated remotely using radio waves. When we operate the transmitter, the movements are converted into radio signals and transmitted; the receiver mounted on the RC car catches these waves, immediately converting the signals into steering movements or motor rotations to move the car.
Authentic RC cars, such as those made by Yokomo, utilize a transmission system known as the digital proportional system, which enables steering and throttle movements to be controlled faithfully, steplessly, and smoothly. Typical RC cars use a 2-channel system, operated via two channels for steering and throttle.

Where can I buy remote-controlled cars?

Yokomo RC products are sold at Yokomo retailers nationwide. In addition to hobby shops, our products are increasingly being carried by automotive supply stores as well. Please look for a store near you, or you may also use one of our online shops on the internet.
