Yokomo Grand Prix Round-36 Event Report

On Sunday, May 6th, the final day of Golden Week, we held the Yokomo Grand Prix Round-36 at Yatabe Arena! For this event, we did not change the course, but instead used the same On-Road Grand Prix course layout that was newly updated to ETS course specifications at the end of April. The new course features a high-grip carpet surface with a variety of corners, ranging from high-speed sweepers to tight, low-speed transitions. Furthermore, as this event took place ahead of the 1/12 scale All-Japan Championship, we also hosted a "Pre-All-Japan Championship" featuring 1/12 Stock and Open classes.

■ Super Scale SS48 Class

This class utilized a short course layout that excludes the back straight, and qualifying was based on best-lap timing.

The top qualifier was ☆-kun.

The final was a 4-minute circuit race, featuring a heated battle for the lead right from the start between top qualifier ☆-kun and 2nd-place qualifier Kerossi Kerossi.

Both top drivers maintained a blistering pace, lapping everyone from 3rd to 6th place, and in the end, Kerossi took the win by a narrow margin of just 0.45 seconds, marking his second consecutive victory since the first race of 2018, Round-35.

1st Place: Kerossi 17L 4:10.095

2nd Place: ☆-kun 17L 4:10.554

3rd Place: Raijii~ 16L 4:04.819

(TQ: ☆-kun)

■ YD-2TC Scale Class

Starting from this event, kuro (+25g) and mogyy (+25g) were carrying weight handicaps. Despite this, both put up a great fight to qualify 2nd and 3rd, while the TQ was secured by Katsuraji No. 1, who had no handicap!

In the final, the gap between the best lap times of the top three drivers was within 0.4 seconds, setting up a scenario where a single mistake could shift the standings. However, all three drove with consistent pace throughout, lapping everyone from 4th place and below, and finishing the 4-minute race in the exact order of their qualifying positions.

1st Place: Katsuraji No. 1 13L 4:08.534 (Total weight from R-37 onwards: 1450g)

2nd Place: kuro 13L 4:10.883 (Total weight from R-37 onwards: 1450g)

■ YD-2TC Class

Qualifying TQ Kei Racing and 2nd qualifier Kazu Racing both secured podiums in all previous races since R-35 and were assigned a 25g weight handicap. However, they drove flawlessly, seemingly unfazed, and led the race during the final.

Fukui retired from the race after a devastating crash just over a minute in.

Kei Racing, in the lead, maintained a consistent pace to pull away from the pack. While the battle for 2nd heated up, 3rd-place runner Takejiro struggled to improve his position due to a few mistakes. As a result, the two handicap drivers finished 1st and 2nd, matching their qualifying order.

1st Place: Kei Racing 14L 4:08.953 (Total weight from R-37 onwards: 1425g)

2nd Place: Kazu Racing 14L 4:11.788 (Total weight from R-37 onwards: 1400g)

After that, the drivers from 1st to 10th place continued to clock laps consistently in the mid-18-second range, and after the 5-minute mark, the 3rd-place runner closed in on 2nd. Late in the race, the gap between the top three was within 1.9 seconds, but Takejiro’s pace did not falter, securing the TQ & Win.

The top two runners had received weight handicaps due to their podium finishes in previous races, but they showed no signs of being affected, maintaining speeds in the high 15s to low 16s. In the end, the field from 1st to 7th place finished the 8-minute race in the same order they qualified.

The final, which started with 10 cars in a beautiful formation, saw TQ-qualifier Kame-kichi fall back after a crushing accident around the 1-minute 30-second mark.

Tamotsu moved into the lead and clocked consistent laps, pulling away from the field to lead by 2.3 seconds over 2nd place by the 3-minute mark.

Late in the race, 2nd-place runner Tsubasa Iizuka's pace began to drop, and in the end, Tamotsu took the win with a commanding 3.644-second lead.

The Touring class, which included two Yokomo staff members (Hirosaka and Yamauchi), saw ultra-high-speed action from official practice through to the final.

In the final, TQ-qualifier Hirosaka built a solo lead from the start, but 2nd-place Yamauchi and 3rd-place Miyazaki pursued him in a tense battle characterized by high-speed cornering that pushed the limits of traction rolling.

Midway through the race, Yamauchi suffered a devastating crash and dropped to 4th. The 2nd and 3rd-place runners chased Hirosaka, but they could not close the gap as their times remained neck-and-neck. In the end, Hirosaka won with a 2.329-second lead, never relinquishing the top spot from the start.

1st Place: Masami Hirosaka 17L 4:01.997

2nd Place: Yuhiro Yamauchi 17L 4:04.326

3rd Place: Masahiro Miyazaki 17L 4:07.965

■ 1/12 Sports Pre-All-Japan Class

The 1/12 Stock class Pre-All-Japan Championship, held ahead of the All-Japan Championship, was a fierce battle from the start with very little time difference between all cars. However, as the surface grip increased, the race became rough with several flips due to traction rolling.

Amidst this, TQ-qualifier Usui maintained his pace in the mid-to-high 12-second range, defending the lead and finishing the 8-minute race with a total of 38 laps in 8:09.364, 2.398 seconds ahead of 2nd place.

1st Place: Seiji Usui 38L 8:09.364

3rd Place: Tsuyoshi Matsumoto 38L 8:12.486
