Team Yokomo has performed a racing tune on the YD-2 S Plus, which features a carbon chassis with a high-mount motor. Pursuing the ideal form for competitive drifting, we have finished this as a high-end model that combines high-quality option parts with newly designed components. The aluminum special motor mount, adjustable to 7 different positions, allows for fine-tuning of weight balance, while the aluminum suspension mounts with bushing inserts provide optimal suspension alignment. By equipping the main chassis with carbon chassis plates and an aluminum front bulkhead, it is now possible to freely change the roll rigidity. The most notable feature of this machine is the newly designed aluminum steering bellcrank. It achieves an adjustment range compatible with various treads and allows for Ackermann ratio settings tailored to driving style and road surface conditions. By using press-fit bearings for the wiper support and the connection to the center link, excessive play is reduced, bringing the steering assembly—the key to RWD drifting—to racing specifications. Furthermore, the gear differential joints now feature aluminum construction with resin protectors, resulting in a machine that embodies the ultimate competition vehicle in every detail, from the suspension and steering to the drivetrain.
Key Features
The most significant feature of the YD-2 S series is the high-mounted motor. By raising the rear center of gravity compared to previous YD-2 models, the car induces roll to increase rear traction. However, simply mounting the motor high can reduce performance at corner exits or during direction changes, potentially leading to delayed acceleration or difficult handling. Therefore, for the YD-2 S series, we completely redesigned the gearbox to avoid excessively high motor placement, successfully ensuring rear traction while maintaining high performance.
The dedicated gearbox interior transmits drive from the spur gear to the rear by passing under the motor. The 4-gear transmission is structured to increase rear traction through rotational torque during acceleration, making it even more suitable for low-mu surfaces. The rear differential is equipped with a 4-pinion gear diff. The axles are made of newly designed lightweight aluminum, and by installing resin adapters on the universal shaft side, wear is prevented while reducing play to enhance throttle response.
The previously optional special motor mount is now standard equipment. By changing the fixing position of the plate, the motor can be selected from 7 positions (front to back). This allows for precise weight balance adjustments to achieve the optimal balance for the driving surface.
Optional graphite chassis plates, which attach to both sides of the main chassis, are now standard. These increase main chassis rigidity and allow for subtle adjustments to chassis roll stiffness by choosing different screw-fixing positions for the side braces. This enables fine-tuning of the front-to-rear traction balance without altering suspension alignment, making it easier to obtain driving characteristics suited to surface conditions.
Only short Li-po batteries are supported, but various mounting styles can be chosen depending on the fixed position of the battery stopper. In addition to horizontal and vertical layouts, the horizontal position can be selected from 3 locations (front to back), allowing for adjustments to front/rear traction and other characteristics by altering the weight balance.
We have adopted a newly designed aluminum steering bellcrank. The split-type center link allows for changes to the tie-rod pivot positions, making it possible to change the tread while maintaining the Ackermann ratio. Additionally, by press-fitting the bellcrank bearings in advance, steering play is reduced and response is improved. This also has a significant effect in preventing hunting.
